Lubricant Bases
Through its Porto Torres biorefinery, Novamont offers a range of base oils specifically designed for the formulation of biolubricants for the agricultural sector, automotive and aerospace industries, as well as for the production of hydraulic oils and specialty industrial fluids.
These products are obtained by the esterification of pelargonic and azelaic acids with various polyols. The high renewable carbon content and biodegradability of the resulting lubricants make them particularly suitable for use in sensitive areas potentially exposed to micro-dispersion, offering advantages over standard products. Moreover, using Novamont esters in biolubricant formulations provides significant technical benefits: it improves oxidation resistance, extending service life, reduces fuel consumption, and enhances lubrication performance.
The table below presents the ester grades available in the portfolio:

Matrilox® pelargonic esters are included in the Lubricant Substance Classification (LuSC) list, making them suitable for use in Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) without restrictions regarding biodegradability or aquatic toxicity. They are also NSF HX-1 certified, allowing their use as base oils for lubricants that may come into incidental contact with food.
Below are the main application sectors for these esters:
