NOVAMONT participates to European Bioplastics’ workshop in Brussels on biodegradable bioplastics
“De-mystifying biodegradable plastics and how to put them to proper use” is the title of the workshop organized on 25th January by European Bioplastics, the European association which represents companies of the bioplastic sector. The workshop’s objective was to underline the role that bioplastic can play in the circular economy. The event was hosted by the Green MEP Margrete Auken at the European Parliament.
The initiative gave the possibility to better analyze the technical standards for biodegradable and compostable plastics and, most of all, show the achievements already reached with specific applications on the market.
Stefano Facco, NOVAMONT’s New Business Development Manager and Vice-President of European Bioplastics, showed how biodegradable and compostable plastics can help to set a up a proper and efficient management of the biowaste stream.
The workshop was held the day after the vote of the European Parliament’s ENVI Committee on the circular economy package. European Bioplastics welcomed the measures approved by the Committee. In fact, among the provisions approved there are:
- the rise of the overall recycling targets for municipal waste: 60 % by 2025 and 70 % by 2030;
- a mandatory separate collection for biowaste;
- measures in favor of bio-based recyclable packaging and of biodegradable compostable packaging. Specifically, Member States can promote the use of those products through economic instruments, or reviewing existing legislation hampering their use, thus improving market conditions.
