Novamont at the side of Ride Green: for a more sustainable Giro d’Italia
After the Israeli stages, the Italian Grand Tour - Giro d'Italia - will arrive tomorrow in Caltagirone, for the first Italian stage of the tour that in two weeks will cross Italy from south to north and then end up in the Roman capital.
Also this year NOVAMONT will be at the side of the pink caravan, as a supporter of Ride Green, an RCS Sport project, born in 2016 in collaboration with ERICA, with the aim of promoting the protection of the environment and landscape through the correct waste collection. At each stage, collection islands will be installed and during the event, citizens, spectators and medias will be involved in awareness initiatives.
For the third edition, NOVAMONT will support the project through the supply of biodegradable and compostable cutlery, plates and glasses that will be distributed in the refreshment stations of all the 18 Italian stages. Events such as the Giro d'Italia, involving thousands of people, including athletes, spectators and professionals, generate large amounts of organic waste, which could represent a precious resource, but which, however, is often landfilled as contaminated.
Using biodegradable and compostable cutlery allows to reduce the possibility of polluting organic waste, which through the composting process can be transformed into compost, a valuable soil improver that, if used in agricultural land, allows to improve soil fertility and restore the organic matter, thus contributing in reducing CO2 emissions.
Ride Green has the ambition to share culture and to contribute to forming a green thought, it wants to do it with the spectators, the public administrations, the professionals, the sponsors and the athletes. In 2017, thanks to Ride Green, the Giro d'Italia reached a recycling rate of 89%.
