NOVAMONT ONCE AGAIN AMONG THE “BEST FOR THE WORLD” B CORPS IN 2022
Prestigious award in the “Environment” impact category
Novara, 18 July 2022 – Novamont does it again!
Novamont has been a Benefit Corporation and B-Corp certified since 2020, and in 2022 it was once again named a “Best for the World™” B Corp, in recognition of is exemplary environmental performance.
As part of the B Impact Assessment, in the Environment impact category Novamont’s score was among the top 5% of results in its group, namely companies with over 250 employees. In particular, Novamont is the only company in the “Chemicals & chemical products” category and has the highest score in Italy and Europe. It ranks second worldwide.
The company distinguished itself for its positive environmental impact and for having attained the highest standards of sustainability in this field, thanks to its circular bioeconomy model and its good practices. Two thirds of its score was for the production of Mater-Bi, the range of innovative, compostable and bio-based biodegradable materials produced in a highly integrated and continuously evolving production chain. This helps to increase the circularity of economic systems and to redesign applications, exploiting the combination of renewability, compostability, biodegradability in the soil and the absence of eco-toxic effects or accumulation in the environment. The remaining third was for the implementation of best practices, including energy efficiency measures, the acquisition of energy from renewable sources and use of raw materials with environmental certification.
According to Catia Bastioli, Managing Director of Novamont, “We need to fully understand the systemic and bridging value of different sectors of the bioeconomy, their potential for decarbonisation and the decoupling of resources and development, with their network of new plants and new bioproducts, their biorefineries capable of making use of waste and by-products and multipliable local projects to learn how to do more with less. In this context, Novamont sees Mater-Bi bioproducts as catalysts in the ecological transition, creating truly circular pathways in the joint-design, use and end of life that becomes new life.”
“We are proud to be a BFTW2022 and to belong to the B Corp community. For Novamont, being a Benefit Corporation and a B Corp means operating as a source of regeneration, looking beyond short-term profits and ensuring transparency and creating value throughout the local area. We need to work with partners who believe in this approach so we can avoid bioproducts ending up contributing to business as usual,” concluded Bastioli.
The Best for the World award was presented by B Lab, the global non-profit network that certifies B Corporations – for-profit companies that meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. Today there are over 5,000 Certified B Corporations in 83 countries and across 156 industries, united by a shared goal: transform the global economy to benefit all people, communities and the planet. B Corps meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency and accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corp certifications do not merely assess a product or service, but consider the overall positive impact of the company behind the product. Through the B Impact Assessment, B Lab assesses how a company’s operations and business model influence workers, the community, the environment and customers.
In order to become a B Corp, a company must score at least 80 points on the assessment. Novamont received its certification in July 2020 with a score of 104. With an update to data in 2020 the company received a new score of 120, increasing further in 2021 to 132 following implementation of a series of improvements.
