The Irish case study on the separate organic waste collection through the use of Mater-Bi compostable bag

On January 30, Richard Bruton, Irish former Minister of Communications, Climate Action and Environment, launched the Final Report Brown Bin Awarness National Pilot Program in Sligo City, presenting the pilot project for the recycling of the organic waste carried out from 2014 to 2015 in Sligo City.
 
Promoted by the Ministry, the Sligo County Council, the Cré - Irish Composting Association - and Novamont, the project aimed at improving the interception of organic waste and reducing its contamination, providing a range of educational tools, including a brown bin and the biodegradable and compostable bags.
 
Novamont supported the project through a 9-month supply of compostable bags made of Mater-Bi for 6,000 households to Sligo County Council. This organic waste separate collection model made possible an increase of 25% in citizens’ participation and of 59% in the collection of organic waste, reducing the contamination by 89%.
 
Thanks to the positive results, the Sligo City case study in the future could be the driver of further organic waste collection projects in Ireland.
