Bio-based nano-materials and nano-composites for biodegradable bioplastics: the National Stakeholder Event of the Bionanopolys project organized by Novamont

On June 29, the National Stakeholder Event "Bionanopolys: bio-based nano-materials and nano-composites for biodegradable bioplastics" organized by Novamont, partner in the Bionanopolys project, was held online. The event gave Italian stakeholders an opportunity to learn about the project, its goals and related activities.

Bionanopolys is a project, funded within the European research and innovation program Horizon 2020. Started in 2021, the initiative aims to develop an Open Innovation Test Bed (OITB) platform that brings high added value in the industrial sector, particularly in the development of innovative bionanocomposites, made from sustainable raw materials, and bio-based nano-products, for different sectors.

Among the speakers Lidia Castano, Project Manager for Bionanopolys at Novamont, who highlighted the technological value of the OITB platform and explained the Group's contribution to the initiative. In particular, Novamont, will be involved in experimenting and testing innovative bionanomaterials suitable to be used in biodegradable and compostable applications.

Then Stefano Manfredini, Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Toxicology at the University of Ferrara and Scientific Advisor for Bionanopolys at AmbrosiaLab, illustrated the role and activities of AmbrosiaLab, emphasizing in particular the importance of upcycling, a process through which AmbrosiaLab enhances high-tech raw materials for applications in cosmetics or food packaging.

Finally, Giulio Poggiaroni, Dissemination Leader of Biomac and Project Manager of EUBIA and ETA-Florence, presented Biomac European project, pointing out in particular the synergies between OITB and highlighting the active pilot cases. Biomac, of which Novamont is also partner, aims to create a collaborative ecosystem, an Open Innovation Test Bed (OITB), in which technologies using bionanomaterials can be validated, that can be an incubator to support small and medium-sized companies in the upscaling process.
