Novamont's bioeconomy model and the creation of sustainable agro-industrial chains in Sardinia, chosen as case study by the European Commission

Novara, 26 May 2015 - "Building new biomass supply chains for the bio-based economy", on 27-28 May 2015 the Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission will organise in Alghero, Sardinia, a workshop to connect primary production and industry for the development of new biomass supply chains for the production of biochemicals and biomaterials.

The regional development model promoted by Novamont, based on the biorefinery integrated into the local area and on an approach of close collaboration with industry, agriculture and institutions, will be presented during the workshop as case study of successful diversification of rural economy and regeneration of marginal areas. In particular, Catia Bastioli, CEO of Novamont, and Battista Cualbu, President of Coldiretti Sardinia, will illustrate the strategic partnership established between the two companies in January 2015 in relation to the cultivation of thistle and for the creation of innovative agro-industrial chains, in full respect of local biodiversities and a cascade-approach in the use of biomass.

In the afternoon of May 27, more than one hundred participant (including players from the whole biomass supply chain from agricultural and forestry producers to industry, members of the Commission), will also have the chance to visit some local farms and see the results of the collaboration between Novamont and Coldiretti with one's own eyes: from thistle fields to the trial of protein meal for animal feed and the use of biodegradable products developed by Novamont, such as mulch films made of Mater-Bi and the Matrol-Bi biodegradable biolubricants for agricultural machinery, according to a sustainable and integrated approach to agriculture.
